Language Lost

When you think about things being endangered you normally think about the bengal tiger or black rhinoceros…but languages are endangered too.

It is estimated that there are 7,000 languages spoken in the world today with 50% of the world’s population speaking 50 languages and the other 50% speaking 6,950 languages.

Approximately one language dies every 14 days. By the next century nearly half of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken on Earth will likely disappear, as communities abandon native tongues in favour of English, Mandarin, or Spanish.

What is lost when a language goes silent?
